Summer Organ Concert – Ty Woodward

Join us for three 60-minute concerts by world-class organists performing on the landmark Shaffer Memorial Organ in a magnificent cathedral setting. In conjunction with Pipe Organ Encounter OF American Guild of Organists and featuring Jaebon Hwang and Jason Klein.

FREE PARKING: Abundant secure parking is available for all events at the church. It is located below Belmont Village, the building east of the Sanctuary. From Wilshire Blvd., use the driveway by the main steps in front of the Sanctuary and proceed under the overhang to the underground parking lot. Please observe the signs that identify which spaces are for church use. After parking, proceed to the stairwell and elevator located at the church end (west end) of the parking structure.

Ty Woodward is currently Staff Organist at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, playing the 4 manual, 37 rank Wurlitzer originally installed in the Fox Theatre in San Francisco. His infatuation with the Theatre Organ began with his first visit to Organ Stop Pizza where he was “wowed” by the sound of the Mighty Wurlitzer and fine music making of the staff organists. Ty became a regular substitute organist at Organ Stop during his college years and later was a staff organist at the Organ Power Restaurants in San Diego followed by a stint at the Captains Galley, Redwood City, California.

He has played both classical and theatre organ concerts throughout the U.S. Performances have ranged from Shea’s Theatre, Buffalo; the Byrd Theatre, Richmond; the Paramount Theatre, Cedar Rapids; the Alabama Theatre, Birmingham and the outdoor pipe organ in Balboa Park, San Diego to Westminster Abbey, London; Trinity Church, New York; The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C.; St. James Cathedral, Toronto and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles. He has played several major works with orchestra including the Symphonie Concertante of Joseph Jongen and Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3.

His recording credits include a solo classical recording on the Aeolian-Skinner organ at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and a theatre organ recording on the Wurlitzer organ at the Auditorium Theatre in Rochester, N.Y. along with accompaniments for numerous choral recordings.Ty holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Organ Performance and a Masters degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Southern California. He is a former Dean of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and has served on the Commission of Liturgy and Music for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.

As a pipe organ consultant, he has worked with numerous churches in the design and installation of their new pipe organs, and is the area representative for the Schantz Organ Company of Orrville, Ohio.
