WUMP provides a weekday program for children to help them grow and develop socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively. We provide a safe, comfortable and challenging learning environment, allowing your child to be part of a larger group, to try new things – and to have fun! It is the philosophy of the school to foster independence of thought, personal worth and responsibility, and a spirit of mutual helpfulness.
.
Westwood United Methodist Church Preschool welcomes families of all races, religions, and cultures.

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is based on the philosophy of The Creative Curriculum®. We believe that young children learn best by doing. Our curriculum is built on theories of development in young children, with the belief that all children learn through active exploration of their environment and that this plays a critical role in learning. The goal is to help children become independent, self-confident, inquisitive and enthusiastic learners.
.
The curriculum identifies goals in all areas of development including Social/Emotional, Cognitive, Physical and Language. Planned activities for the children, organization of the environment, selection of toys and materials, and interaction with the children, are all designed to accomplish the goals and objectives of the curriculum and give your child a successful year in school.
.
Our curriculum integrates learning throughout the day in Literacy, Math, Science, Social Studies, The Arts, and Technology. Teachers offer a wide range of teaching strategies – from child-initiated learning to teacher-directed approaches – to best respond to children’s learning styles, strengths, and interests.
.
The teachers design the curriculum for their children using different interest areas including Dramatic Play, Discovery, Blocks, Outdoors, Table Toys, Cooking, Art, Music & Movement, Sand & Water, and Library.
.
The richer the environment, the more concrete opportunities there are for children to learn by interacting with materials and people. The teacher’s role is to encourage children to observe, to be active, to make choices, and to experiment. It is our goal to provide a loving, comfortable environment in which children can grow and advance through developmental stages at their own rate. We offer yoga, science and music enrichment programs at no extra cost to families

Preschool Programs

WUMP operates year round, serving children ages 2 years 4 months (in September) to 5 years. With Preschool and pre-Kindergarten programs five days a week, there are morning and full day programs in four classrooms. If you are interested in an afternoon program, please contact us. Depending on class size, there are two to three teachers in each room, and our adult-to-child ratio is between 1:7 and 1:8. Our children are typically placed into classrooms by age, however we do factor in developmental readiness and each classroom may have up to a 9 month age span. Children do not need to be toilet learned before starting preschool.

Our Parent & Toddler program offers a rewarding two-hour class for parents and their children ages 18 months to 36 months old. Classes meet once per week (Monday through Friday) from 9:00 am to 11:00 AM. Thursdays are our designated Toddler & Friends Day. If you are unable to attend, your toddler may be accompanied by a grandparent, nanny or significant adult. With up to 10 children each day, each class provides an opportunity for you and your child to experience time together in an enriching classroom environment. Here, our toddlers have the chance to explore their growing independence and to develop basic skills. Children enjoy a snack with the assistant teacher while close by, parents have their snack and participate in a discussion group facilitated by the lead teacher. Either Mom or Dad can attend and may take turns participating during each session.
.
Our Parent & Toddler program offers a safe, child-friendly environment where parents and children can learn together. Children play in ways that encourage social and emotional growth while parents have the opportunity to develop supportive relationships with the teachers and other parents. The Parent & Toddler program is all about making connections between toddlers, parents and educators, and introducing creative activities to develop cognitive, motor and language skills.
.
Parent and Toddler sessions are offered year round. You are welcome to participate in one or more sessions (when you are currently enrolled in a session, you will have priority to attend the next session). Applications for the Parent & Toddler program are accepted at any time. Please see the Prospective Parent page to download an application. Please ask about our Young Toddler Program for children ages 15 months to 18 months. Transitional Toddler Program offered each Spring.
