Dear Westwood Family,
Last Sunday’s Fall Festival was a lot of fun for me–I loved seeing so many of the people of our congregation sharing a meal together. I got to stand at the chili line and help serve, and I loved getting to see you all come through, enjoying the tasty and nourishing food that came from the homes of our congregation.
It was a joy to watch the Grapplers, our middle and high school youth, set up and host games for our children. The adorable pumpkin patch they made in the sand play yard was so fun, too! I love how older kids get to connect with younger kids at church, like in extended family. It’s such fun to watch.
The food was delicious, of course, both the pots of chili and the baked goods. I love that the winners of our cook-off and bake-off (independently judged and verified!) represented sanctuary folks and Lofters, young and old, new to the church and long-time members, folks who are parents, and in Queer group, the Chancel Choir, and are planning the Women’s Retreat (among other things). Everyone participated so well, and there were so many excellent dishes beyond those recognized by the official awards!
It was, of course, also a gift to see people. I loved watching folks connect with new people, and greet old friends. Our beloved Facilities Manager, Pablo Jauregui, while still out on a medical leave, was back for the day (directing us all in what to do!) to share in the day. I didn’t realize ahead of time just what a gift this would be to my spirit, to share in an ordinary and beautiful lighthearted, joy-filled church tradition. There are very many things that feel heavy in this moment in the world; it is a treasure to share experiences of community that energize us for the long work before us, of faithfulness, justice, and love.
Church has always been a place where we could reliably be a part of a meaningful community with people we might never otherwise choose to be with or to know. In church, we are expected to see and know God more fully through each other. What a gift!
I hope that you have some fun memories from Sunday, too. Or, that you are encouraged by knowing that it happened.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
