The Transfiguration

Rev. Dr. Don Saliers

“When music finds us and claims all that we are, even if only from time to time, we are found in a very remarkable way. It is as though we ourselves were re-created, in the image of our true source and our true destiny.” – Don and Emily Saliers, A Song to Sing, A Life to Live: Reflections on Music as Spiritual Practice

I should confess that I first paid attention to Rev. Dr. Don Saliers, our guest preacher this Sunday in The Sanctuary, because I was a big fan of his daughter, Emily. (She is one of the Indigo Girls, a folk rock duo that helped sing me through life during high school and beyond.) Since, I’m delighted to have found that Don is also helping sing me through life and ministry. His deep love of scripture and music, and his thoughtful open-hearted engagement of the power of the poetry of the psalms, have helped me understand and access the treasures of our traditions provide to make us more human, and to engage what’s transcendent through our voices, lives and bodies.

I’m thrilled that he and his colleague from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology, Rev. Barbara Day Miller, will be with us at Westwood this weekend. They’re leading a one-day retreat on Saturday, and Don will preach on Sunday.

In The Sanctuary, we will celebrate the transfiguration, a moment of revelation of the glory of Christ. I look forward to the revelations and grace Don’s words and presence will help us encounter this week!

grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
