03 Mar Giving Up Fear for Lent
Sunday, March 1, 2020
Rev. Molly Vetter
This Lent, we are inviting you to practice sabbath-keeping; hopefully, you’ve already picked up your free devotional, which connects our weekly scripture passages to poetry by Wendell Berry, and offers both meditations and practices for going deeper. (If not, I hope you’ll pick one up on Sunday!) The introduction to the devotional describes sabbath keeping as “an ancient technology of health, dignity, and joy.” It’s useful in moving us toward wholeness, wellness and renewal.
I hope you will join me in exploring why and how this practice might help us this season.
We start this Sunday with a familiar story of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness; this 40-day period at the start of his adult ministry is echoed in the 40-day season of Lent. While we often focus on ideas of suffering and temptation, the scripture and the Holy Spirit also point us toward the difficult and liberating work of overcoming fear. I look forward to worship this Sunday as we lift up this gift that can be found through our faith.
I look forward to seeing you Sunday.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
