In scripture passages from both Old and New Testaments, we find description of moments of realization in the story of the people of God–times where our sacred text acknowledges that things have not gone as we expected. Sometimes, as in a passage from Isaiah, it’s God’s voice that speaks in heartbroken tones about how things have gone painfully wrong. In our Gospels, we hear Jesus confronting people with the painful reminder that following him is neither simple nor easy. In worship this Sunday, we seek wisdom from God, who goes with us through it all, even and especially when it’s not what we expected.
