This Sunday, our scripture offers us the familiar story of Nicodemus, a faith leader who comes to Jesus under cover of darkness, with questions about what it means to begin again–what it means to be born from above. If we sift through familiar Christian traditions that define being “born again” in specific and narrow ways, underneath it all we find a spacious exploration of a mystery that’s at the heart of salvation: can we really begin again? How do we do that? Can we really dare to believe that we get fresh starts, total forgiveness, and new life?
