This Sunday, we begin a new sermon series, looking at John Wesley’s teachings on love and “Christian perfection.” In 2023, the phrase might raise suspicions of a Christianity rooted in perfectionism and narrow-mindedness, for Wesley it was a way of describing a faith that pursues Christ and expects it to make a difference in this life. With marks of humility and an expansive experience of divine love, it’s a way of living toward God that honors our capacity to bear more and more Christ-like love. For the next five weeks, we will look at Wesley’s teachings, as described in his “Plain Account of Christian Perfection,” alongside the first chapters of 1 Corinthians.
