As we begin Advent this year, our scripture starts in the first verses of Matthew–with a genealogy that traces the generations that connect Joseph all the way back to Abraham. It may seem like an odd, tedious choice for the opening lines of the story of the good news of Jesus Christ. But there it is: a family tree, rooting Jesus’ family in a story of God that began long before his birth in Bethlehem. In 2022, as we enter into our own re-telling of the stories of Christmas, our scriptural traditions are woven into a broader fabric of stories that belong to our families and our church traditions. As we start this season of Advent this year, we connect these stories–and let them point us in the direction of hope.
