We begin the season of Advent on Sunday, with contemplative music and inspiring preaching. In this season, we prepare ourselves for Christ’s coming into the world; this is not merely historical, but an earnest prayer for Christ’s presence among us, here, now. We welcome our own John Holbert back to our Sanctuary pulpit. Professor Emeritus of Homiletics at Perkins School of Theology in Dallas, John became a part of Westwood Church when he and Diana retired to Los Angeles, and we are grateful for the ways he shares his gifts in preaching and Hebrew Bible scholarship with our congregation. John first joined the Perkins faculty in 1979, and taught Old Testament and preaching during his long tenure on faculty. He has written extensively in his field, has preached and lectured throughout the world, and has written and sung opera. He shared scripture commentary and thoughts regularly on his blog, The Peripatetic Preacher.
