This Sunday is Pentecost. The day celebrates God’s gifting of the Holy Spirit to the church. There are lots of traditions that have become normal: many people wear red, we sing hymns about God’s Holy Spirit, we add banners colored red like tongues of fire. We decorate with doves, a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Even as some of our traditions have become predictable, however, there’s a certain confusion at the heart of our celebration! When God’s Spirit arrives at that Pentecost celebration (as told in Acts chapter 2), people are confused about what it means. They’re confused about what to do with it. Receiving the gift of divine Spirit disrupts our expectations–it is far from tidy. On Sunday, our worship will make space to honor and notice what God is doing in our midst, event (especially) in unprecedented times.
