We Methodists love to talk about grace, so this Sunday’s gospel text is a little uncomfortable: Jesus tells a parable, in which a rich man and a poor man named Lazarus have fortunes that are reversed and exaggerated after death. There is, according to this parable, nothing that can be done to change that. (And, worse, it may be pointless to try to convince the people who are still living, who haven’t listened yet.) The parable invites our own reflection: what persuades us to change our lives? What would be convincing for our neighbors?
