In 2016 in a sermon at Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, DC, Valerie Kaur captivated holy imagination when she asked: what if the darkness we perceive isn’t the darkness of the tomb, but the darkness of a womb? Her question distills the invitation of our Gospel–to believe in hope, and to claim power in something that’s being born anew. Our scripture passage for this Sunday describes a world that’s falling apart. We ask: how can we participate in birthing something beautiful into that open space?
