Christmas at Westwood

At Christmas, we celebrate how divine Love was born into the world in Jesus our Christ.
.
Our holy, incarnate God was housed in a humble manger, because there was no room in the inn in Bethlehem. God arrives, taking up residence in lonely and frightened spaces of our broken and hurting world. We invite you to join us this Christmas, as we celebrate our God who is present among us, finding a place to dwell wherever we make space.

.

Location & Parking: All events take place at Westwood Church located at 10497 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. Abundant secure parking is available below Belmont Village, the building east of the Sanctuary.

JOIN US FOR SUNDAY WORSHIP

.
The Sanctuary Gathering – 9:30am
Traditional liturgy, an inspiring message, and resounding organ. We worship with choral music and sung hymns, sacred dance, poetry, prophetic preaching, and by lighting advent candles. This year, we will share poetry from Mary Oliver, and guest musicians will play classical guitar, crystal bowls, and harp. All ages are welcome. Participate in person or by Facebook livestream.
.
The Loft Gathering – 10:30am
An innovative gathering with spiritual conversation, creativity, coffee, and music for those willing to re-think church. Gatherings take place in an intimate, relaxed environment upstairs at Westwood. We are a community that honors questions. Whether you are deconstructing harmful theology, beginning fresh, or just looking to go deeper in faith, we welcome you. When you arrive, simply follow the signs pointing to The Loft. For more information, visit www.TheLoftLA.org.

HOUSING THE HOLY PRAYER STATIONS

.

Visit our outdoor prayer stations, featuring sacred art by Kelly Latimore. The pandemic has laid bare painful realities of economic disparity, oppression, and division. We invite you to reflect: How can we become houses where the Holy will be born anew–offering respite, sustenance and care?
.
The prayer stations face Wilshire Blvd, and are accessible to the public from the sidewalk; if you are driving to visit, our parking structure is available and they are also close to street parking along Warner Avenue.

SANCTUARY CHRISTMAS CONCERT

.

Sunday, December 12th (3pm) The Sanctuary
Join us as we celebrate the season with song, featuring Westwood’s organist Yoojung Chung, harpist Alison Bjorkedal, the Sanctuary Quartet, Chancel Choir and other guest musicians. The Concert is free and open to the public, and it is available by Facebook livestream.

CONTEMPLATIVE CHRISTMAS SOUND BATH

.

Tuesday, December 21st (8-9pm) The Sanctuary
On the longest night of the year, join us for a contemplative experience that offers an evening prayer liturgy brought to life with a healing sound bath. Led by Ruth Sie and Pastor Molly Vetter, this experience brings gifts of a meditative sound bath into the sacred beauty of our sanctuary. Please wear comfortable clothes; you are welcome to sit or lie in our pews or bring a mat to lie on the floor. CLICK HERE to RSVP
.
Ruth Sie is an Acupuncturist and Classical Chinese Medicine practitioner trained in sound therapy, tai chi, and health coaching. In her practice, she combines acupuncture with sound, using the powerfully healing vibrations of the voice, Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, tuning forks, flutes, and various chimes, strings, and percussion to create an immersive healing experience that opens, clears, and balances the body, nervous system, and mind. Outside of her practice, she is an East-West acupuncturist fellow at the UCLA Center for East West Medicine where she helps develop integrative medicine training programs.

.

11pm – Christmas Eve Carols, Communion, and Candlelight

Join starting at 10:30pm, as we share a beautiful extended prelude in our sanctuary; participate in person or by Facebook livestream.

THE POETRY OF ADVENT: A DEVOTIONAL

.

In worship this advent, we are sharing poems from “Devotions: The Selected Poems of Mary Oliver.” We invite you to continue to use these poems in your devotions at home, and offer you this free devotional. It connects the scripture passages we are reading each Sunday with poems from her anthology, and invites active and prayerful reflections to deepen your faith. Pick up a hard copy of the devotional booklet at church on Sunday, or click here to download a pdf copy.
