08 Jan In the Midst of the Storm
Dear Westwood Community,
Like you, I have been on edge for the past day, watching and praying as wildfires move through our community. While the church is at present safely away from the fires, members of our congregation have evacuated–some anxiously awaiting word about whether their homes still stand, and others in sorrow about what is gone. We know that lives have been lost in these fires.
In this moment, here when we know that so much has been lost and so many are at risk, I pray for God’s comfort and peace for our grief. We lament the loss of life, of beloved homes, and for neighborhoods that will never be the same.
We pray for those who are in harm’s way: protection for emergency workers and firefighters, and volunteers who help move others to safety. We ask mercy for those who are most vulnerable in our community–including elderly neighbors, the unhoused, those living in care facilities, and our disabled neighbors. We pray for those who are displaced–for safety in evacuating and for a place to stay.
We pray that these ferocious winds would be stilled–for a change in weather patterns, and for rain. We confess our contributions to a changed climate, and ask God’s mercy for us and all creatures. We pray that no more fires would start while these winds are so strong.
Lord, have mercy.
We would love to hear from those of our congregation who have evacuated, or are in need during these fires. We would also love to hear from you if you have space that could house someone who has evacuated, or who has lost their home. Please call the church office at 310.474.4511 or email Sabrina Simmons so that we can collect this information in case it can be helpful in coming days.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
