Join the Summer Choir – Jeanne Contreras

“I moved out to California right after I finished my Masters degree in Voice and Opera Performance from the University of Michigan. My brother Scotty was already living in Culver City, and he was attending Westwood United Methodist Church, who needed to hire some “ringers” for a Christmas album. This began my relationship with WUMC. I became a regular member in 1985 right after my daughter was born. (She will be 42 in December). My kids learned how to drive by driving me to choir practice and church every Thursday and Sunday, from Long Beach! I soon became the Soprano Soloist/Section leader and felt this was a gift of worship twice a week. Ruth Drossel and I had kids around the same age and really wanted to start kids choirs….the Hope and Glory Choirs were born. (Hope K-3 and Glory 4-6). We felt it was important for our kids to learn Methodist hymns and preserve our cultural heritage for our church. It was after 25 years as soloist that I gave up that position to concentrate on my California Teachers Association goal of mandatory kindergarten. I realized I had been a member of our Chancel Choir with seven different choir directors and six pastors! I couldn’t be happier with our current director Dr. Andrew Schultz and his great idea of Summer Choir. Genius! In the past we just had August off and the soloists each covered a Sunday. Come join Summer Choir! Choir is my family!”

JOIN THE SUMMER CHOIR!
Sundays – July 19th through September 13th
Practice – 9am in The Sanctuary to sing at 9:30am
Do you like to sing? Don’t read music? That’s okay! Join us in The Sanctuary at 9am to learn a simple anthem that we’ll sing in the 9:30am gathering that day. We don’t wear robes, and we sit in the church service as part of the congregation until the Offertory. Come one Sunday, or come to every Sunday! For more information, contact Andrew Schultz at andrew@westwoodumc.org. (Regular Thursday evening rehearsals restart on October 1st with the Chancel Choir returning to the worship service on October 4th.)
