Organ Concert Series – Shirley Williams

“One thing I love about the organ programs is learning about the composers and the music. Just as when I am part of a docent-led tour at an art museum or engage in conversations at a book club, I learn things I would probably not even notice or appreciate. It’s always more than I can process, but it’s obvious that a lot of thought (and expertise!) goes into the program notes.

But above all is the emotional reaction to the arts: It can be angst or tranquility and/or all the emotions in between! I can just be in the moment as the sounds wash over me. One of my favorite composers is Duruflé, and most of his pieces are based on Gregorian Chant. The old becomes the basis for the new! I was pleased when Peter included Duruflé in this year’s concert.

The variety of pieces played is also a plus. I like the traditional as well as some of the more modern styles. There are moments in pieces by Phillip Glass that are pleasant, but then the minimalism becomes too minimal for me. Still, Glass and other innovators expand the musical repertoire, and we have been blessed to hear some of those compositions on our marvelous organ.

I am a Francophile, so July 14th, France’s Independence Day (La Fête Nationale) is special to me. In 2013, Ned Tipton, who had been the Canon for Music and Organist Choirmaster at The American Cathedral in Paris for 21 years, was the guest organist for the concert series on July 14th. I brought my large French flag, and Pablo hung it up in the courtyard for the reception. Ned and I even sang La Marseillaise after most people had left. Vive la musique!”
