Small Acts of Love – Jenniffer Duran-West

“For over a decade, I’ve served on the Board of Directors of BreastfeedLA, advocating for equitable resources and dignity for families of color in Los Angeles. This work is deeply rooted in my faith, because every birthing individual and every child deserves honor, support, and hope. That’s why I do this work.

Last year, BreastfeedLA launched its Black Infant Health (BIH) Program, providing lactation support, education, and wraparound care for Black families. Despite its success, funding cuts threatened its continuation. Through community advocacy and raising our voices, the program secured funding for another year, but critical needs remain, especially for in kind donations: diapers, transportation vouchers, and food.

Join the Diaper Campaign (Sept 6–20, 2026)
Westwood UMC is launching the campaign of small acts of love, diaper drive in support of Black and BIPOC families in LA / OC. Diapers may seem simple, but they free families from impossible choices, between diapers, food, or rent.

How to Participate:

  • Donate diapers (sizes 2–5) at Westwood UMC on Sept. 6, 13, or 20 or via this link.
  • Pray for the families served, asking God to provide for their needs.
  • Spread the word! Invite others to join this ministry of dignity and mercy.

Why This Matters
Black birthing people in California face a pregnancy-related mortality rate 3.1 times higher than Hispanic and White birthing people (CA Dept. of Public Health). These disparities reflect systemic racism and broken systems. As people of faith, we are called to act justly, be merciful, and walk humbly with God in support of people in need.

The small acts of love diaper drive in support of Black and BIPOC families in LA / OC is a step toward restoring justice and breaking chains of inequity. Let us answer this call to action with an open heart and hands, trusting that even small acts of love can change lives. As I reflect on my journey with BreastfeedLA’s mission of advancing infant feeding equity and the holistic well-being of BIPOC families, I’m reminded of the words of Mother Teresa: “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” Each diaper donated, each prayer lifted, each act of service is a testament to that love.”
