Sierra Service Project – Will Read

“Hi! My name is Will Read, and I am part of the Grapple Group here at Westwood UMC. I chose to start going on SSP for three main reasons: First, I like the feeling of connecting with a community and other people. It feels more helpful than just talking about the issues and forms a more meaningful connection with those impacted by such issues. Also the feeling of bonding with those I work with is one of intense trust. Second, I like the unplug that SSP gives. In SSP cell devices are confiscated so that people stay present. I appreciate this because it allows you to step back from the bustle of daily life and all the connected chaos. It also allows you to feel unstressed to meet an unreasonable deadline. Lastly, I appreciate all the staff that work to provide meals as well as structure when I am on a project. They are incredibly supportive and are incredibly approachable when you need some help. In addition, they are incredibly open to sharing their journey to joining the SSP staff as well as the prior journeys. In conclusion, I think that everyone that can go to SSP should go at least one time so they can experience it for themselves.”
